Etymology

The English name amber comes from French: gingembre, Old English: gingifere, Medieval Latin: ginginer, Greek: zingiberis (ζιγγίβερις). Ultimately the agent is from Tamil: inji ver (இஞ்சி வேர்). The botanical appellation for basis in Tamil is ver (வேர்), appropriately inji basis or inji ver.3
